"Howell V-Four" Engine Plans Revisions
Information Page
Plan sets up to and including SN-123
Sheet #53 - Ream the crankpin hole in the Intermediate
Shaft Disk and the Intermediate Crankshaft
disk .001" oversize (.3135") so that the crankpins will
be a slightly loose slip fit into the holes. If the
pins fit the holes too tight and if there is a slight amount of
misalignment of the shaft elements, then
excess side pressure on the intermediate bearings will cause bearing
failure.
Plan sets up to and including SN-93
Sheet #45 - I have discovered that over time, the oil pressure
causes the graphite Shaft Oil Bushing to
erode which allows oil to bass through the ball bearings and be
flung off the crank disks and flooding
the cylinder walls with too much oil. As of January 7th 2009,
I am making a new bushing from babbitt
as it is soft enough that it will not harm the shaft and also
will not erode. I will be putting a lot of running
hours on the engine during the next few weeks to be sure this
does the job.
Plan sets up to and including SN-71
Sheet #53 - Experimentation has shown that the center .059"
diameter oil cross hole in the crank pins and
NOT drilling the two .042" outer oil cross holes will prevent
an excess of oil from escaping at each crank disk
which in turn throws too much oil into the cylinders and up into
the camshaft galley. This results in oil fowling
the spark plugs, oil spitting out the exhaust and oil working
up around the valve lifters.
Plan sets up to and including SN-69
Sheet #7 - The far right dimension on the bottom view of
.175" should be .186" instead.
Sheet #9 - Step #3 note should read: Step #3 should read as follows:
Mill Two slots using a .156" dia. end mill .370" deep
centered .240" from
the top of the cylinder bank leaving the .080" wall between
the inner ends.
Then using a .187" dia. end mill, mill one long slot .185"
deep as shown
at right. Do the other cylinder bank the same way. See at right
for slot lengths.
Plan sets up to and including SN-59
Sheet #20 shows the counterbores for the camshaft "O"
rings to be .038" deep. This is too deep
to allow the "O" ring to be compressed under certain
variables. The counterbores should only be
around .032" deep to allow for paint thickness and variations
in cross section with some "O" rings.
Plan sets up to and including SN-042
I have located a larger and heavier duty ball bearing that
can be fit in the space available on the
Intermediate Crankshaft in place of the .375" ID x .625"
OD x .156" thick bearings. The heavier
bearings are 10mm ID x 19mm OD x 5mm thick and shielded both sides.
I don't know that these
heavier bearings are needed, but bigger is usually better, and
I like to overbuild rather than underbuild.
If you haven't made the Intermediate Center Bearings Holder or
the Intermediate Crankshaft and the
Intermediate Shaft Disk, you may want to consider using the larger
bearings. If you decide to use the
larger bearings, contact me and I will send you new drawing sheets
#46, 47 & 53 for these parts.
Plan sets up to and including SN-039
Sheet #39 - The fan blades are too long to fit inside the
fan shroud. You can either make the slots in
the fan hub .265" deep instead of the .200", or use
the revised fan blade dimensions as shown below.
I made a special form die to press identical curvature in each
fan blade and they come out really nice. Send your
blades to me at the above address along with your return address
mail label and the return postage amount and
I will press the curvature in them for you free. Be accurate on
the .298" dimension so they will fit in my die.
Plan sets up to and including SN-038
Sheet #32 top right corner, the Throttle Shaft view is
labeled "Bottom View". It should be labeled as "Top
View"
instead. The idle jet hole in the vane is pointing down. On the
End View, the drawing is correct, but the label should
read that the idle jet is on the left instead of the right. The
stop slot depths are .080"
Plan sets up to and including SN-032
Sheet #36 - The drilled vertical hole in the Breather Top,
Side View, shows .218" diameter.
It should read .281" instead.
Sheet #37 - Pump Cover Section A-A. The twice size dimension gremlin
got me again. The 1.094" dimension
should be 1/2 that, and needs to be .547" instead.
Sheet #60 - The Side View of the Distributor Body inside dimension
shows .834". This should read .934".
The Hall Sensor Holder Disk bottom view shows the 2-56 threaded
hole to be .340" from the disk center.
This should be .370" instead.
