"Howell V-4 Engine" Gear Type Oil Pump Jig Photos

Note - the photos below were taken using left over parts from previously
made pumps and are not of the actual oil pump I used on my V-4 engine.

This pump jig is very handy when making gear pumps. As can be seen, there
are adjustments everywhere to suit different sizes of pump bodies. The brass
plug just below the pump body is the same diameter as the shaft spacing for
the gears used. Not shown in this photo, athe pump cover would have been
in place first so the shaft holes in the cover and the body exactly match. Then,
with the cover removed, one gear cavity is bored to exact diameter and depth.
Next, the brass plug is removed and the body is moved down against the stop
which was set earlier. Then the second gear cavity is bored like the first one.

Note the two locating pins sticking out of the body. The holes for these were drilled
through the cover and body at the same time before any other machining was done.
Mill the sharp points off the body where the two cavities meet to eliminate burrs from
the boring tool. Machine the pump inlet and outlet ports as well as the cover and body
profile as per the drawings.
